Bauart 28-37 coaches

The coaches of Bauart '28-'37 are classified to type:

The coaches of Bauart 1928 up to 1937 were characterized by the entrance doors who were parallel with the coach sides, but the entrance doors stood 330 mm inwards. The coaches from 1933 were welded constructions, this resulted in a high weight reduction.

Construction

The coaches from 1928 up to 1932 were constructed with a frame of waltzed profiles. The steel sidewalls were fixed with rivets to the upstanding profiles. The roofs were of the so called "Tonnen" roofs. Begin thirties there was a trend to higher speeds. Because of that the DRG began to search for less heavy materials and constructions. The result was a new welding technique and a less heavier construction. Coaches from 1933 were the first welded express train coaches. The frames existed from side and transverse supports in an open construction which was welded together. The steel sidewalls were welded to the upstanding profiles. The express train coaches from 1935 were more rounded in favor of the streamline. The inwards placed entrance doors at both sides of the coaches were more rounded too.

Bogies

The coaches who were built from 1928 up to 1932 were all equiped with bogies of type "Görlitz II schwer". See also bogies of the Hechtcoaches.

In the meantime other coach manufacturers were busy with the development of other types of bogies. They were offered to the DRG and were tested in a testprogram. So it happened that there came various heavy bogies under express train coaches for test purposes, especially coaches of Bauart 1926 and 1928 were used for these tests. The DRG decided at the end of 1928, after all testruns to gone further with the bogie "Görlitz II schwer". But it appeared during the test that changing of springs and the use of other sorts of springs improved the running of the bogie and subsequently the running of the coach. So all coaches from 1928 got bogies of type "Görlitz II schwer" with the modifications.

But in spite of the modifications, the passengers had still complaints about the restively and noisy running of the coaches. There was formed a commission that had to investigate what the cause was of this noisy running, and how it could be resolved. The axle hanging was changed as well as the sheet springs. With another series of improvements this resulted in bogie "Görlitz III schwer". But this bogie was not completely satisfying, finally the axle distance was reduced and they made use of lighter bogie frames, after all this bogie was named "Görlitz III leicht". This bogie was used after all for express train coaches from 1933 up to 1937.

In 1930, Wumag began to test bogies who were welded. The bogies were mounted under an AB4ü-28, and they made testruns with speeds up to 150 km/h. From 1936 coaches were equiped with welded Görlitzer bogies.

Brakes and couplers

The coaches were equiped with screw couplers. The coaches built between 1928 and 1932 were equiped with automatic one chamber air pressure brakes, partly automatic vacuum brakes and not-self-braking air pressure brakes. The coaches from 1933 got an extra hand brake which worked on one bogie. The coaches from 1935 got a fast brake on the air pressure brakes. And the coaches from 1936 got a handbrake which was operated from one of the entrance compartments.

Interior

The interiors were roughly the same as the interiors in the Hechtcoaches. From Bauart 1933, the third class got a change so that the impression of the interiors was more friendly. The compartment walls were covered with oak and were varnished so that the difference with the other classes was lesser. In coaches from Bauart 1933 all compartments got a sliding door between compartment and corridor and a swing door between the corridors and entrance compartments.

The coaches from 1928 up to 1932 were heated with hot air. In coaches from Bauart 1936 the temperature could be adjusted separatly in the compartments by means of a button. The toilets were provided with flowing water and washfacilities, coaches from 1933 had their water reservoirs in the roofs. The coaches had light bulbs for lighting, the energy for the lighting was generated by a generator which was driven by a belt via an axle on a bogie. There was one generator each coach.

Exterior

All coaches were equiped with extractor fans of type "Wendler". All coaches Bauart 1928 up to Bauart 1937 got old style corridors who were resistant against weather influences.

Colouring

The colouring of these coaches was unchanged in comparison with the Hechtcoaches. See also colouring of Hechtcoaches.
