Skirted coaches

The skirted coaches are classified to type:

The skirted coaches were part of a developing program for streamlined rolling stock. This program started around 1936 when the DRG ordered six prototypes of coach type C4ü-36a. In 1937, the board of directors of the DRG decided that from now on all new built passenger coaches had to be streamlined. Which leaded to an order of five extra prototype coaches. The mass production of skirted coaches began in 1938.

Construction

The skirted coaches were different than the other generations of coaches. The coaches had smooth sidewalls and were welded, this resulted in a decrease of weight. The coaches provided roomy entrance compartments and had not anymore to the inside placed windows. The roof was slanting towards the ends and traversed a little over the corridor connection. The coaches had old style corridor connections. The roofs of the skirted coaches were characterized by their roudings, and their triangular savings on all four corners. In these savings they could place signal plates. The braking system and the Görlitz III bogies were made for speeds up to 150 km/h. The skirts between the coaches where the coaches owed their name to complemented the modern impression of these coaches.
