All Rheingold coaches, and later TEE coaches (except the Eurofima coaches) had a length of 26,4 meter. Except the bar coaches ARD4üm-64 and dining coaches WR4üm-64 which had both a length of 27,5 meter. The coaches were constructed of steel St 52. The thickness of the walls differs between 1,5 and 3 mm.
The Rheingold/TEE coaches which were built until 1965, distinguish themselves from the other coaches by the roof ends, which are rounded until 1965, and after 1965 they were straight at the end.
New were also the heat reflecting windows which absorb half of all ultraviolet radiation. In principle there could no windows be opened in the coaches, only a couple of windows could be opened in case of break down of the climat control system, so that there was enough ventilation in the coaches.
The doors between the coaches were self closing sliding doors which worked with an electro pneumatic system. The self closing doors contributed to the quietness inside the coaches. The coach corridors themselves were of the modern types made of rubber.
The entrance doors in the coaches were UIC approved swing/folding doors. Small signal lamps on the outside of the coaches indicated a not or bad closed door.
