Bauart 1954

The first mass produced coaches type "m" were the coaches Bauart 1954. One part of the coaches were characterised by the roofs which were fixed with nails. In the first years of production also the sidewalls were fixed with nails to the frame. Later most of these joints were welded because they were affected by corrosion. The coaches Bauart 1954 were built from steel St 37, the sidesupports were made of steel St 52. The frame, sidewalls and roofs were all made separately and were joint together to a coach. The three mainparts were mostly welded.

The isolation of the coaches was done with Silanmats, the roofs were isolated with cork or asbestos.

The walls of the coaches were in the second class made of Novopan panels and in the first class from wood from African pear trees. The heating was done with hot water, this water was heated up with steam from the locomotive or via the central electric trainwire.

The lighting in the coaches Bauart 1954 was done by means of a battery in each coach. This battery was recharged by a generator. In the first serie of coaches this generator was installed under the frame of the coaches and was driven by a cardan axle. In later series the generator was placed closer to the axles, so that the generator was not visible anymore from outside. The generators installed under the first series were later replaced by the new generators.

The coaches Bauart 1954 had windows with a width of 1000 mm, the coaches Bauart 1962 had windows with a width of 1200 mm. In this detail you can distinguish the two different types.

The coaches were equiped with the so-called "Gummiwulstübergange" as corridors between the coaches. The corridors were closed with four part folding doors.

The m-coaches Bauart 1954 developed themselves to a leading international concept. The coaches were a good compromise between comfort and low costs.

The first holiday trains appeared in the fifties, these trains were riding mainly to the important holiday resorts. At the beginning there were sleeping coaches (or actually "Liégewagens" as they are called in German, these coaches are less roomy and luxury than sleeping coaches) in service which were rebuilt pre war express train coaches. The new founded TOUROPA decided to order 88 sleeping coaches (Liégewagens)of type "m" in the fifties. These coaches were built between 1953 and 1955.

The coaches were built by Rathgeber, WMD, Credé and Wegmann. The sleeping coaches were painted in a blue color. The sidesupports and skirts were gray colored. The construction was mostly the same as the m-coaches. Only the sleeping coaches were provided with KE brakes and were suitable for speeds of 140 km/h. For the first time coaches were equiped with a speakerinstallation. The coaches had each 12 compartments with each 6 sit/sleeping places. In the sideway was place for luggage. The coaches were also provided with 2 toilets and three washing rooms. Next to the wash room was a little storage room for luggage.

22 coaches were equiped with a kitchen and 11 coaches with a hairdresser compartment. Later these special compartments were modified to ordinary compartments. Many coaches were equiped with an oil heated stationary heating installation. For the lighting were two axle driving generators in use. A couple of coaches was even equiped with a third axle generator.

From 1954 the DB ordered themselves 260 sleepingcoaches (Liégewagens) for use in their regular trains. These coaches got a green color and had little side skirts. Also the speaking installtion wasn't installed in all coaches.

A part of the coaches was built in Kiel. The coaches had 12 compartments. Each compartment had 6 sit/sleeping places. For each compartment was one folding seat, so that the total of places was 72 + 12 in each coach.

When the DB had enough express train coaches, they ordered in 1958 the first coaches with luggage compartments. The luggage coaches were until 1962 indicated with the letters "Pw", but after 1962 they were indicated with the letter "D".

The coaches BPw4üm-58 were derived from the coaches C4ümg-54. One half of the coach was second class and the other half had a luggage compartment. The loading capacity was 10,5 ton and the luggage compartment had a surface of 27,9 m2. The luggage compartment was provided with a fourpart folding door of 1800 mm width. The first three coaches built had also a custom compartment for the services in international trains. Because of that the surface of the luggage compartment was only 16,4 m2. In total there are in 1958 20 coaches built of this type.
