Introduction


In 1961 the UIC established standard design coach types. The m-coaches of the DB became the standard design coach with type indication "X". The m-coach was improved on some points, so that it complied with the demands of the UIC to became a standard design type.

All m-coaches from 1962 were built according these new standards. For example the entrance swingdoors were replaced for combined swing/folding doors, the corridors between the coaches were provided with self closing sliding doors instead of folding doors which didn't closed automatically. The sidewalls were strenghtened by extra pillars.

Also the interiors of the coaches were more friendly furnished than coaches Bauart 1954. In the second class were the seats upholstered with red imitation leather, the walls were upholstered with imitation wood. In the second class were 12 compartments, and in the first class 11 compartments.

The coaches from 1963 got windows with a width of 1200 mm. These dimensions were afterwards adjusted in the UIC type X, which had initially windows of 1000 mm width. When you look to the window width of the coach, you can distinguish between coaches Bauart 1954 and coaches Bauart 1962.

B4üm-61/Büm 233


In 1962 the DB ordered 97 second class coaches type B4üm-61. These coaches got the numbers 19 238 - 19 334. From 1966 the indication was changed to Büm 233 and the numbers changed to 51 80 22-40 900 - 51 80 22-40 996.

The coaches were suitable for four tensions, namely: 1000V 17Hz AC, 1500V 50Hz AC, 1500V DC and 3000V DC. The coaches could also heated up with steam, when it was available. Heating coaches with steam was done frequently during epoch III, the steam came from the locomotive. Locomotives like the V 200 were equiped with a steam installation for heating passenger trains.

AB4üm-61/ABüm 224


These combined first/second class coaches were built from 1962 in a total of 55 coaches. The coaches had windows as also used in the Bauart 54 coaches BC4ümg-55/AB4üm-55/ABüm 223. The coaches got the numbers: 15 161 - 15 215 and were renumbered in 1966 to 51 80 31-40 380 up to 51 80 31-40 434 and 51 80 31-80 423. This last coach had a maximum speed of 160 km/h, the other coaches had a maximum speed of 140 km/h. The coaches were suitable for four tensions, namely: 1000V 17Hz AC, 1500V 50Hz AC, 1500V DC and 3000V DC. The coaches could also heated with steam when it was available.`

A4üm-61/Aüm 203


The first 1st class coaches Bauart 1962 were delivered from 1963. In total there were 144 coaches A4üm-61 built which were indicated after 1966 as Aüm 203. Initially the coaches got the numbers in the 11 XXX category.

After 1966 all coaches were renumbered to 51 80 10-40 210 up to 242 (140 km/h), 51 80 10-70 013 up to 043 (160 km/h), 51 80 10-80 917 up to 933 (160 km/h), 51 80 10-90 001 up to 013 (160 km/h and no steam installation for heating) and 51 80 10-92 101 up to 150 (160 km/h). The coaches 51 80 10-80 220 and 221 were later equiped with bogies of type MD 67.

The coaches were suitable for four tensions, namely: 1000V 17Hz AC, 1500V 50Hz AC, 1500V DC and 3000V DC. The coaches could also heated with steam when it was available.

From this coach type is only one coach built in 1963. From 1966 the coach was indicated as Avmh 204.

From this combined first/second class coach are in total 303 coaches built from 1964. The coaches were indicated as ABüm 225 since 1966.

The coaches were numbered from 15 216 and further. After 1966 the coaches were renumbered to 51 80 31-40 440 up to 526 (140 km/h), 51 80 31-70 001 up to 215 (160 km/h and no steam installation for heating) and 51 80 31-80 001 up to 019 (160 km/h).

The coaches were suitable for four tensions, namely: 1000V 17Hz AC, 1500V 50Hz AC, 1500V DC and 3000V DC. The coaches could also heated with steam when it was available.

B4üm-63/Büm 234


From 1963 were in total 1848 coaches B4üm-63 built. These coaches were indicated after 1966 as Büm 234. The first 349 coaches were numbered as 19 335 - 684, subsequently the rest of the coaches was immediately at delivery provided with the new UIC numbers. The coaches from before 1966 were then renumbered. The 1848 coaches were numbered in the following number series: 51 80 22-30 001 up to 102 (140 km/h and no steam installation for heating), 51 80 22-41 000 up to 499 (140 km/h), 51 80 22-70 001 up to 610 (160 km/h) and 51 80 22-73 915 (160 km/h and 1000V 17 Hz AC).

BD4üm-61/BDüms 273


The first combined second class/luggage coaches Bauart 1962 were built in 1964. In total there were 163 coaches BD4üm-61 built. The coaches got the numbers 95 139 up to 95 168. After 1966 the coaches were renumbered to 51 80 82-40 150 up to 179 (140 km/h), 51 80 82-70 001 up to 133 (160 km/h and no steam installation for heating), 51 80 82-80 001 up to 003 (160 km/h) and the coaches got the indication BDüms 237.

The coaches were suitable for four tensions, namely: 1000V 17Hz AC, 1500V 50Hz AC, 1500V DC and 3000V DC. The coaches could also heated with steam when it was available.

Bc4üm-62/Bcüm 243


The first by the DB ordered sleeping coaches (Liégewagens) Bauart 1962 were built in 1962. The coaches Bc4üm-62 got the numbers 19 801 up to 911. After 1966 the coaches were indicated as Bcüm 243 and got the numbers 51 80 50-40 001 up to 091 (140 km/h), 51 80 50-40 301 up to 394 (140 km/h), 51 80 50-80 005 up to 255. (160 km/h). These coaches were just as the express train coaches later standard coaches according to UIC norms.

The coaches were suitable for four tensions, namely: 1000V 17Hz AC, 1500V 50Hz AC, 1500V DC and 3000V DC. The coaches could also heated with steam when it was available.

In total there were 467 sleeping coaches built of this type. Later in epoch IV all coaches were rebuilt to coaches Bocm 246.

The coaches had 10 compartments second class, each 1915 mm width. Each coach had a staff compartment, 2 toilets and three washing rooms. The first 95 coaches had even four washing rooms. The interiors were largely the same as the interiors of coaches Bauart 1954 of the types CL4ümg(K)-53/BC4ümg(K)-53/Bcüm 251 and CL4ümg-54/BC4ümg-54/Bcüm 241. The staff compartments had a refrigerator and a coffee machine.

Bctüm 256


The second serie of sleeping coaches (Liégewagens) Bctüm 256 was built between 1967 and 1970. 60 coaches were built of this type. The coaches were ordered between 1967 and 1970 mainly for tourist trains. The coaches were longer than the other coaches, namely 27,5 meter. In 1981 and 1983 the coaches were rebuilt and indicated as Boctmh 257.
